Cosun Beet Company advises arable farmers not to wait too long to harvest1 sugar beet. On Wednesday, 26,000 hectares of beets had to be harvested nationwide. 'Because of the increasing risk of worse weather, it is important not to lose any more time', emphasises Arno Huijsmans, director of agricultural affairs. Nationally, 26,000 hectares of beet still had to be grubbed up on the reference date of 1 December. That is 32 percent of the acreage. In the past five years, an average of 18 percent was still in the ground on 1 December. At the beginning of this week, 55 percent of the beets had been processed, reports Cosun. Although the sugar content has fallen by 0.1 percent to 16.9 percent in the last week in the current campaign, it has been at a stable level since the beginning of November.
