The EU reinstated pre-war tariffs and quotas on Ukrainian agricultural imports, including sugar, effective Friday, ending wartime exemptions started in 2022, Reuters reports. Ukrainian sugar imports surged to 400,000 tons in 2022/23 and over 500,000 tons in 2023/24, far above the pre-war 20,000-ton quota, prompting EU farmers’ concerns over cheaper imports. EU Agriculture Commissioner Christophe Hansen said new sugar quotas will be “significantly higher” than pre-war levels but lower than recent imports. Negotiations for a new EU-Ukraine trade deal began June 2, with a potential agreement by summer, balancing support for Ukraine and EU farmers’ interests.
