The newly published EU-US trade framework could provide some welcome stability for European agriculture. Under the deal struck between Presidents von der Leyen and Trump, any EU sugar or sweet products exports to the US would face a maximum 15% tariff ceiling - replacing the previous system where reciprocal tariffs were stacked on top of existing duties. "The framework emphasizes stability and predictability, which is exactly what commodity traders need," said an industry source. Meanwhile, the EU's decision to eliminate tariffs on US industrial goods and expand agricultural import quotas could affect input costs for European food processors, potentially impacting sweetener market dynamics. The agreement protects EU agricultural sensitivities while opening access for products Europe "needs," perhaps suggesting that sugar's strategic importance as a domestic crop remains recognized in Brussels.
