On 27 September 2022, Member States gave the green light to the European Commission to ban the import of food products containing traces of thiamethoxam and clothianidin (two neonicotinoid insecticides). These products were already banned in Europe since 2018. "This is part of the Green Deal, which is really our Bible, and the Farm to Fork strategy," says Stefan de Keersmaecker, spokesman for the European Commission. He clarifies that this decision does not contravene WTO rules. The regulation will be submitted to the Council and Parliament, which will have two months to react. If the two institutions do not oppose it, the regulation will be adopted in early 2023.
