The expected beet yield per hectare is below the previous year's figure, but remains slightly above the five-year average. The decline in acreage is much more significant: at around 350,000 hectares, it is almost 10% smaller than in the previous year - and as low as last in the 2020/21 marketing year. Accordingly, sugar production is also likely to be lower than in the previous year. The current estimate is 4.4 million tonnes. Beet cultivation in Germany continues to be under considerable pressure from the diseases SBR (syndrome of low sugar content) and stolbur ("rubber beet"), which are transmitted by the reed leafhoppers.
