David Wheatley, a UK sugar beet grower, is deciding whether or not to grow sugar beet next year. Under the new contract negotiated between NFU Sugar and British Sugar, he is offered £30 per tonne for 65% of the crop, but only £25 per tonne for the remaining 35% through a market linked scheme. Alternatively, the 35% can be sold on world price linked scheme, currently £20 per tonne. David Wheatley's break-even point is £30 per tonne, and so David Wheatley is not making any profit from sugar beet. Despite receiving £33 per tonne this year, David Wheatley decides against growing sugar beet next year, opting grow another crop instead.
