UK ‘sugar tax’ will push up prices by 5pc

Coca-Cola and Irn Bru among soft drinks giants to urge Prime Minister Starmer to overrule the Chancellor’s plans before the Budget expected in November. Keir Starmer is being urged to overrule Rachel Reeves and cancel her sugar tax raid ahead of the Budget. In a direct plea to the Prime Minister, drinks giants including Coca-Cola and Irn Bru said the Chancellor’s plans will drive up prices for consumers. Writing to the Prime Minister, more than 10 of the country’s biggest soft drink producers said they were facing £220m in extra costs because of the change, and that it will damage business confidence in Britain.
